Yasmin Side Effects

Yasmin is a fourth generation prescription birth control drug that uses the progestin drospirenone to prevent pregnancy, as well as some other effective uses. Yasmin was created, manufactured, and distributed in 2001 by Berlex Laboratories, before eventually being purchased and assumed by Bayer Healthcare in 2006. While Bayer has more commonly distributed the prescription contraceptive Yaz, Yasmin is still available today as one of the most popular oral contraceptives on the market.

Both Berlex and Bayer have been warned by the Food and Drug Administration on multiple occasions throughout the past nine years about their misleading and, in some cases, dishonest marketing campaigns that claimed competitive superiority against similar prescription birth control medication. Additionally, Berlex and Bayer were warned by the FDA that neither company had made clear the side effects of these fourth generation oral contraceptives. More recently, Bayer was cited for marketing its prescription birth control drugs for more than just their intended purposes.

The purpose of Yasmin is to prevent ovulation by creating changes to the walls and lining of the cervix and uterus, making it more difficult for sperm to reach the egg and for the fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. Yasmin and other similar drugs that use drospirenone are indeed successful in pregnancy prevention, and they have also proven useful in fighting mild acne and aiding against premenstrual disorders, most specifically premenstrual dysphoric disorder, which includes symptoms like anxiety, exhaustion, appetite suppression, and weight gain. Yasmin is and has always been intended for women ages 14 and up.

While Yasmin and similar prescription birth control medication are greatly successful against pregnancy, they do not come without their fair share of side effects, ranging from mild to serious, and in some cases fatal. Women who have used or are using Yasmin have reported that they have suffered a number of serious life-threatening and permanently damaging side effects, including:

  • Heart attacks

  • Stroke

  • Blood clots

  • Pulmonary embolism

  • Gallbladder disease

  • Sudden death

Common side effects are those that occur within at least one percent of the women using the prescription drug Yasmin. Among the common side effects reported by women currently using or having used Yasmin are:

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Stomach pains

  • Headaches

  • Weight gain

  • Loss of or increased appetite

  • Decreased sexual activity

  • Vaginal discharge and yeast infections

  • Non-cyclical menstrual bleeding

Other common side effects that are more serious however not life threatening include:

  • Hair loss

  • Swollen hands or feet

  • Drastic changes in menstrual cycle

  • Skin discoloration

  • Eye irritation, visual impairing

  • Vaginal irritation and discharge

Women who are pregnant should also not continue to take Yasmin once it is medically determined that they are pregnant. Yasmin and similar birth control medication can cause serious birth defects in an unborn baby. Women who use Yasmin should also maintain a healthy lifestyle and eating habits in order to avoid suffering the most serious of side effects. Tobacco and alcohol should be completely avoided while taking Yasmin, as should any other prescription medication that is first not cleared by a professional medical expert and/or the woman’s physician.

When taking Yasmin, a woman must take into account her own personal medical history, as well as her family’s medical history. Women should not take the prescription contraception Yasmin if they have a personal or familial of the following medical conditions:

  • Heart disease

  • Previous heart attacks

  • Previous strokes

  • Previous blood clots

  • Circulatory problems

  • Diabetes

  • Breast cancer

  • Cirrhosis or other liver diseases

  • Kidney disease
